Communications Director
The Tobin Project
Cambridge, Massachusetts

“The most important decisions a scholar makes are what problems to work on.”
-Professor James Tobin (1918 – 2002) in Lives of the Laureates

The Tobin Project seeks applications and nominations for the position of Communications Director.

The Tobin Project is a growing organization aimed at affecting thinking within the academy to create a favorable context for policy reform. The project, which brings leading scholars and policy makers together to promote outstanding work in a small number of research areas, seeks nominations and applications for the position of Director of Communications.

The Tobin Project seeks a creative and sophisticated communications professional to increase the presence and influence of academic ideas in the public debate. S/he will become familiar with the latest thinking on a variety of topics by Tobin Project scholars – including Nobel Laureates alongside younger standouts in their fields – and create and execute a strategy to help disseminate these ideas. The Director of Communications will author articles for the Tobin Project and work with scholars to develop their research ideas into op-eds and other widely-accessible formats. S/he will identify print and digital outlets and conduct outreach to facilitate the publication of papers, op-eds, and books. S/he will also look beyond traditional publication channels to conceive of innovative ways for scholars to share their thinking and research. The Director of Communications will develop and lead a public relations strategy for the Tobin Project; creating content for the annual report, website, and newsletters and handling media relations.

The Director of Communications will be a superb writer and editor.  S/he will be interested in academic research and public debate. S/he will have an intimate understanding of the current landscape of academic and popular media and possess the relationship-building skills necessary to help facilitate the placement of Tobin Project ideas. S/he will be an entrepreneurial and creative thinker; able to conceive of new ways in which publications can serve as incentives and avenues for participation by scholars in the public debate. S/he will exhibit exceptional attention to detail.  S/he will have at least 5-10 years of communications experience in the academic, policy, or related field, and will be driven by a deep and personal commitment to the mission of the Tobin Project. The Tobin Project would consider uniquely-qualified part-time applicants.
