POSITION
SUMMARY:
Based in San Francisco, this senior-level
position will play a strategic role in expanding and enhancing RPA’s growing
presence in California and throughout the West Coast. The position will manage
the San Francisco office and will report to the Senior Vice President for West
Coast Operations. Successful candidates will bring to the position a track
record of philanthropic innovation and grantmaking expertise serving a broad
spectrum of family, individual and institutional donors. The ideal candidate
will be a well-respected regional and national leader in the field of
philanthropy with strong ties throughout the public, private and nonprofit
sectors, both domestically and globally.
The Vice President will be comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial
values-driven environment. S/he will be expected to balance a diverse set of
responsibilities including hands-on client services, marketing and business
development, strategic planning and team management.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct the operations of the San Francisco
regional office including supervising a Senior Philanthropic Advisor, Senior
Administrative Assistant and project consultants.

Prepare and monitor annual budgets and
operational plans. Work in partnership with the Senior Vice President in
managing and enhancing RPA’s West Coast operations.

Lead and manage major client engagements
and special initiatives for a diverse portfolio of individual, family,
corporate and institutional donors. Assess issues, organizations and
projects in designing grantmaking/operational strategies and
recommendations.

Direct the business development
initiatives for the regional office including designing and implementing
strategies to cultivate and secure prospective clients. Negotiate client
agreements and commitments.

Serve as a public and press spokesperson,
content expert and knowledge leader on a variety of emerging issues
impacting the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors.

Represent RPA at regional, national and
global conferences and convenings through major presentations, white papers
and board service.

Oversee the design and implementation of
West Coast donor briefings, conferences and symposiums.

Work closely with the Senior Management
Team and Board of Directors in developing and implementing
organization-wide, strategic, financial and operating goals.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
BA and graduate work or
equivalent experience required.
Experience:
Five to seven years of
senior-level experience in grantmaking with increasing responsibilities and
proven effectiveness in working with boards, funders, programs, grant seekers
and non-profit organizations. Experience with grantmaking in social/human
services field required. International philanthropy experience is preferred.
Skills/Knowledge:

Excellent verbal and
written communication skills, as well as strong relationship-building
capacity.

entrepreneurial spirit with superior project management and business
development aptitude.

Strong track record as an
experienced manager and coach.

An understanding of the
broad spectrum of private philanthropy, including trends in giving and key
issues for individual, family, institutional and corporate donors.

In-depth knowledge and
familiarity with major giving vehicles and best practices including
international grantmaking procedures and mission related investment options.

High degree of comfort
and experience in managing client outreach initiatives including marketing,
sales and customer service.

A demonstrated ability
and interest in working independently, covering a wide range of issues and
juggling multiple projects and clients simultaneously.

Ability to work with
multiple constituencies on complex, challenging problems.

Ability to work
constructively and creatively as part of a team. Strong meeting facilitation
and teambuilding skills.

Strong networks in and
knowledge of the West Coast philanthropic and nonprofit communities, with
special focus on the Bay Area and other West Coast regions.

Recognized in the
philanthropic community as expert in critical issue areas and/or trends in
philanthropy.

Commitment to flexible,
innovative approaches to philanthropy.
Travel Requirement:
Willingness and availability
to travel up to 40% of time, including quarterly trips to Los Angeles, New York
and occasional international travel.
