Chair of Management and
Economics
Emmanual College
Boston,
Massachusetts
SUMMARY
Emmanuel College, a
Catholic, coeducational, residential liberal arts college in
Boston, seeks a seasoned teacher-scholar and visionary
academic leader to continue the growth and development of
the department of Management and Economics. This vibrant and
fast-growing department offers degrees in Management and
Accounting and a range of interdisciplinary minors and
concentrations. Majors benefit from a welcoming College
environment rooted in the liberal arts and imbued with a
mission to promote social justice and ethical principles.
The department of Management and Economics provides
students with conceptual knowledge, analytical tools, and
practical skills and experiences that serve them well in a
broad range of professional roles. The management major
reflects the reality of management today – a field of study
and action that is fundamentally multidisciplinary, drawing
theories and models from disciplines such as economics,
mathematics, sociology, political science, and psychology.
Faculty are committed to advancing students’ intellectual,
ethical, and social development such that they become not
just successful professionals, but socially responsible
managers, leaders and individual contributors who create
value for the organizations and communities they serve.
Undergraduates all complete internships to gain experience
and apply principles in a practical setting, and attend a
seminar on campus concurrently to address the theoretical,
practical, and ethical aspects of work.
The College’s
senior leadership is stable, distinguished, and committed to
the growth and sustainable success of the department, which
is central to the College-wide strategic plan. Sister Janet
Eisner, SND, President of the College since 1979, has led
the institution through a time of exceptional innovation,
achievement, and growth. In 2011, Vice President for
Academic Affairs Dr. Joyce DeLeo came to Emmanuel from
Dartmouth College, where she served as Professor and Chair
of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. The
department currently includes nine full-time faculty members
and is poised for expansion in the near term.
The
Chair will be an effective spokesperson and champion for the
department both internally and externally to the College. In
addition to teaching and ongoing administrative
responsibilities, s/he will foster relationships with area
companies and potential partners to develop research and
internship initiatives; mentor and advise faculty; manage
faculty courseload; and oversee department grantwriting and
external funding solicitation.
The College offers a
career-making opportunity for an experienced,
forward-looking administrator with a record of excellence in
teaching and scholarship and proven success in faculty
development, student recruitment and employer relations. The
ideal candidate will also have a terminal degree in
business, management or a related field; a minimum of five
years of teaching experience at the Associate or Full
Professor level; excellent interpersonal and influencing
skills and a warm, collegial style. In addition, s/he will
possess significant experience in course and program design,
a commitment to diversity, excellent written and oral
communication skills, and a record of successful and
productive engagement with faculty, students, the
professional community and other key stakeholders.
Experience leading multidisciplinary programs and building
business-oriented programs within a liberal arts environment
is a plus.

INSTITUTIONAL HISTORY AND MISSION
In 1919, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, an
international Catholic religious congregation, founded
Emmanuel College for women with the mission of “making known
God’s goodness…educating for life.” For much of its history,
Emmanuel served proudly as a Catholic liberal arts college
for women and enjoyed a reputation for academic rigor,
serving a strong New England constituency. The Sisters of
Notre Dame were intent on serving not just the daughters of
affluent families, but reached out to women from
working-class backgrounds, many of whom lacked the means to
pursue higher education. They attracted a talented and
deeply committed faculty, whose legacy and service to the
College’s mission is honored by a new generation of
teacher-scholars who have witnessed the tremendous growth of
recent years.
In 1995, President Sister Janet Eisner
initiated the formation of a six-college consortium of
neighboring institutions, the Colleges of the Fenway, to
expand academic options and enhance student experience for
more than 12,000 students at Emmanuel, Massachusetts College
of Art, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Simmons College,
Wentworth Institute of Technology and Wheelock College. COF
represents a great opportunity for the department to provide
coursework to a broader student population, and to partner
with neighboring institutions to provide joint programs and
concentrations.
Emmanuel has benefited most recently
from a strategic decision to develop a small section of its
land to provide an endowment for its academic mission. The
College entered into a ground lease agreement with Merck
Pharmaceutical and Company in 2001. Merck opened its
impressive Boston Research Center on the Emmanuel campus in
the fall of 2004. The partnership between the College and
Merck has created rich opportunities for collaboration,
including faculty and student research, internships, and
seminars.
In a city rich with universities and
colleges of every type, Emmanuel is Boston’s only
coeducational liberal arts college. The College’s very
successful transition to coeducation in 2001 has been
accompanied by astounding growth in enrollment, now standing
at over 2,500 total and 1,800 undergraduates, making it the
fastest-growing college in New England. Simply put, Emmanuel
has taken to coeducation better than many could have
imagined. As male students have flocked to campus and
enrollment has skyrocketed overall, student activities,
including a burgeoning athletics program and an active
campus ministry, have blossomed.
Faculty and
students frequently cite the friendly, caring nature of the
College as a reason for choosing and staying at Emmanuel.
Faculty members take pride in watching a wide range of
students mature intellectually and socially over their years
on campus.
