LinkedIn + Job Boards = Job Search Success

I heavily emphasize Linkedin in my advice to job seekers, but there are limits on what it can do. At this point, it's not exceptionally helpful as a job board, per se-yet at the same time, it can be one of the most powerful ways to help you find a job.

LinkedIn does have several job posting sections. You can find job postings by looking in the "Jobs" tab, and also looking for Jobs conversations/postings in the groups you are part of. However, the real power of LinkedIn is unleashed by finding a job posting in a job board like Idealist.org, a job board aggregator like SimplyHired.com and Indeed.com, or a specific nonprofit organization's webpage to actually find an open job-and then following up with your contacts at the target organization via LinkedIn.

To do this, you reach out to your network, especially those who work at the organization that is hiring, and ask that person about the position. If you know your contact well enough, you ask if you can use their name in your cover letter or even if they will internally recommend/refer you. Consider doing this before you formally apply, to reduce concerns about conflict of interest in applications. Just reaching out to say you found the position and would be interested to know how it became available will generate far more information that you can then use to improve your cover letter:

* If the position is open because someone was fired, emphasize your reliability, teamwork, and loyalty in your cover letter.

* If the position is open because the organization is expanding, emphasize your ability to bring organizations to a new level or launch new programs.

Ask for referrals and recommendations through Linkedin, but without being too aggressive, and you can double your chances of an interview.

Upcoming Webinar:
LinkedIn for Job Seekers

If you are a job seeker, you should be using LinkedIn.com. It is one of the single most effective job seeking and professional networking resources available today. It can also be used to find volunteers, promote a nonprofit organization, research and connect with potential donors and board members, find consultants and potential employees, get answers to tough questions, replace listservs and discussion boards with richer discussions, and much more.

Join us for our upcoming webinar on Linkedin for Nonprofit Job Seekers on Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 12pm EDT.

This webinar will help you:

- Set up a personal profile that sells you to prospective employers and uses the right nonprofit keywords
- Connect to your existing network quickly and effectively
- Reach out to target contacts through your networks and Groups
- Conduct advanced searches on Linked In to find exactly who you are looking for
- Relocate to a new city or find contacts in a new field by finding Super Connectors

You will walk away from this seminar with new ideas on how to reach out to and engage the 100+ million users of LinkedIn.
