Want to Change Sectors?
Pay Attention to These Ten Lessons!

The typical Sector Switcher story you hear or read about in the media usually has the ring of a fairytale. Some unseen HR Director waves a magic wand and our disgruntled, underappreciated and unattractive C-level executive of a Fortune 500 Company is transformed into the white-horse-riding savior of a Misfortune 500 Nonprofit.

I'm not saying it can't happen that way, but the successful Sector Switcher stories I hear usually share three common ingredients: passion, commitment, and persistence. Without all three, it's very difficult to achieve the personal success and fulfillment that most Sector Switchers tell me they are seeking.

What We're Reading

This month we're reading Billions of Drops in Millions of Buckets: Why Philanthropy Doesn't Advance Social Progress, by Steven Goldberg.

In his book, Goldberg explains how the U.S. nonprofit capital market indiscriminately fragments more than $300 billion yearly among 2 million nonprofits without any information about which organizations can make the best use of the funding. The result is donations and grants that are simply too small to produce meaningful social impact. The book shows how performance-based philanthropy can produce nonprofit growth capital to move the needle of social progress. An interesting, thought-provoking book for anyone on either side of the grantmaking process, we encourage you to read it today.

The Nonprofit Professionals Advisory Group is a consulting firm that takes a unique, "new economy" approach to searching for talent with our unbundled services. We are dedicated to strengthening the capacity of nonprofits and their staff, as well as supporting job seekers through individual resumes, cover letters, and job search strategy coaching.

Sincerely,

Laura Gassner Otting, President
